Phil and I tried the Thai E-Sarn on the basis of fair reviews elsewhere.

When we arrived at about 12:20, the restaurant was empty - completely! No sign of any staff. We decided to give it a try anyway, as we'd made the trip.

We sat down and called for attention. Eventually a waitress turned up, in a none-too-fresh looking apron, and presented us with the set lunch menus - and promptly disappeared. We didn't take long to realise that we would like to see the main menu, and it took some considerable effort on our part to attract the attention of the waitress. When she reappeared, she gave us the main menu - and took away the lunch menu - obviously we couldn't change our mind again!

We attempted to make light of these shenanigans, and (once we had made enough noise to get her back again) asked what was recommended. I'm afraid we didn't have much luck, so we took a chance and ordered:

To start:
"Toad Man Bplaa" Fish Cakes with Cucumber Relish 3.95
"Gai Bai Teoy" Chicken in Pandan Leaf 5.30
A couple of Thai Beers - 2.50 each

Main Course:
"Gang Keaw-Wan Nua" Green Chicken Curry 6.50
"Gang Pad Pak" Thai Red Curry with Mixed Vegetables 5.95
Another couple of Beers (Singha, imported from Bangkok, 6%)

Starters were very good, though I find I'm not keen on some of the Thai flavours. I really must find out what particular ingredients give the flavours I dislike - so I can avoid them, because other aspects of Thai cuisine do appeal to me.

The main courses were again good - and again I had to forgo some parts of the meal due to my particular taste.

Nevertheless, Phil was very pleased with all components of the meal, and especially commended the sticky rice.

We also enjoyed the Singha beer at 6% but once again is rather expensive by the bottle.

Verdict: The good food was marred by indifferent to poor service. The total bill of 37.78 - even though we didn't opt for the set lunch menu - was rather steep.
