Mister KhanIFCO Centre
My wife Marg, son Lee and I wandered into Mister Khan for a quick meal on Sat. 4th Dec 99. The place was very busy, and they found us a table which was almost blocking the steps to the upper level at the back. We ordered drinks, and asked for a few minutes to browse the menu. Poppadoms and relishes arrived pretty quickly - no lime pickle! The poppadoms were average. The drinks took quite a while to arrive. I started with Chicken Shashlik, Marg with Chicken Pakoras and Lee with Sheek Kebabs. The Shashlik was just acceptable - the flavouring was unsubtle. Marg's Pakoras were stodgy and the chicken was not very warm. Lee's Kebabs again were unsympathetically flavoured. I had Lamb Karahi, Lee had Lamb Handi - served in an earthenware pot, and Marg, who never is a big eater, skipped the course, to try nibbles of ours. The Handi was something neither Lee or I had had before, and neither of us liked the flavour, we can't comment on what it should have been like. The Karahi was over-salted, and the meat some of the worst I've ever had.
The service was poor, even though there were plenty of waiters. They did seem to be rather inept - one young (teenage?) waiter spent altogether too much time picking up things he'd dropped. They were all rushing round, but to little effect. I think that an investment in training would definitely pay off here. It seems odd to me that the place was so popular, when the standard of meal we experienced was so low. I can only hope that this was a (very) bad night for them - or maybe just for us - and that the norm is much better. Unfortunately, there are enough competitors nearby that it will be a long time before I've tried them all and return to Mister Khan.
