The George and DragonThe George and Dragon Public House This is a modern Robinsons pub set prominently in the center of the village on the crossroads of the A50 and the B5308 Middlewich Road. Since a recent change of management it has now embarked on a more upmarket image, majoring on its food menu. In particular it prides itself on its fish menu, always including a fresh fish of the day dish. The day we ate there the dish of the day was pan fried plaice. We decided not to go for the fish. For me it was a bigger decision, but my companion isnt keen on fish anyway. However I chose the lambs liver and onions and my companion chose the steak and kidney pie. Both meals were served with either chipped or boiled potatoe and fresh vegetables. We sat in the lounge bar, in section of which was nicely presented as a dining area with tableclothes and place settings. We had to admit that they had tried hard to generate an ambience conducive to dining. There were some minor things which are attention to detail where they had not quite got it right, but nothing that spoiled our meal. For example, cheap single ply napkins. The food came and was fine, about what could be expected for pub food. The steak and kidney pie was the ubiquitous dish of pie filling with the pastry lid. The liver and onions were a little better and I quite enjoyed them. The vegetables were very good and properly cooked slightly al dente, with carrot, cauliflower, peas, sweet potato and new potato. Overall, possibly a little work still to do on presentation and getting away from that pub grub image. Not bad value and a tentative recommendation. For a model of how food should be served in a pub, see The Legs of Man at Smallwood. Phil.
