Alishaan is located in the Bangla Town area of East London. Osborne Street is an extension of Brick Lane, Spitalfields, which is famous as the capital’s curry district. There was plenty of choice about where to eat and I was tempted in by a deal of any starter, any main course, any side dish, rice or naan and a beer for £9.95.

This is London and I couldn’t believe it, could it be too good to be true? I went in and the place was heaving with people. Apparently there was a large party in possible 40 or more in the party. Nevertheless, I was greeted instantly and shown one of the few remaining tables. Despite having to cater for such a large party, the service I received this evening was a credit to the staff.

I went through the extensive menu whilst I ate the poppadoms and chutneys and drank my free half pint of Kingfisher.

I chose the Alishaan Kebab for starters (a mixture of Lamb Tikka, Chicken Tikka and Sheek Kebab). For main course I chose the Korai Lamb and Aloo Saag side dish (Potato and Spinich). I asked if I could have Vegetable Rice instead of Pilau and that was no problem. Even though the deal was £9.95 they didn’t charge me anymore. Finally I ordered a Naan bread as well.

The food was fine. The starters were ample, fresh and spicy and the accompaniments were clean and fresh.

The main course was a plentiful helping, the meat content was good, however one comment I do have is that there was too much residual oil in the food for my complete satisfaction. That took the edge off the enjoyment slightly.

Two more pints of Kingfisher later and the bill was £17.99. I call that a bargain and worth the £20 I left to cover a tip as well. The waiters helped make the experience with their good humour and attention, when all around seemed chaos.

The next time I’m in London, I will definitely be back.
