Trumps Restaurant & Bistro
Tel.: 01636 610661 Friday 11th August 2006 Marg and I were in Newark for the start of a short tour around the East Coast. Newark because we were stopping overnight in our motorhome at Brownhills, so we could buy some motorhome specific bits the following day. We unloaded the scooter and whizzed on into town. Marg spotted the Waitrose store (we don't have a Waitrose anywhere near us) so in we went for a shopping spree limited by the small volume of the scoooter's back box (Phew!) We then wandered around the old town, and walked past several restaurants on the main road, eventually settling on Trumps because the menu suited us both at the time. Marg didn't have much of an appetite, and, for a change, neither did I. However, we did need to eat, and we didn't want to get back to the motorhome and start food preparation so late in the evening.
There were three other parties in the restaurant, which isn't very large. The decor is muted, and the serving staff were young, but enthusiastic. Marg decided on the Smoked Haddock and Spring Onion Fishcake with Chardonnay Sauce, I chose the Gressingham Duck Breast in Cracked Black Pepper and Passion Fruit sauce. We both had Pernod as an aperitif. Fresh, home-made bread was presented - delicious. Broccoli, Cauliflower, Baton Carrots and home-made chunky Chips finished off the meal, and were perfectly done - I am wary of chips as they often give me indigestion, but these were spot-on. The service, ambience and quality of food were above average, so we are happy to recommend Trumps. £22.10 (not including tip / service charge) was, we considered, very good value. Verdict: Very Good Sandro & Marg
