Rowley's113 Jermyn Street Tel.: 0207 930 2707 12th August 2001 Our last day of a long weekend in London. Again, we leave lunch too late, and it's around four pm when we happen across Rowley's in Mayfair. The menu is short, and inexpensive, and the restaurant looks inviting. There's a couple in the window, but we can't see too much farther in. The menu has Cod and Chips, so Marg is interested - I'll just go for the steak. We enter, and the place is empty except for the aforementioned couple - who turn out to be American tourists. We elect to take a seat by the window, so we can look out (there's not much in the way of people-watching inside!) A basket of bread is placed before us, and we start nibbling. Sadly, when our orders are taken, Cod is off! Not much luck for Marg! Marg forgoes a starter, but I take the Caesar Salad. A very large plate arrives. Rather good. Far too much for a starter! One of the staff provides light entertainment by double-parking his car while he nips into the back. A small traffic jam ensues and attracts the attention of a traffic warden who commences to write a ticket. Luckily, a waitress spots this and raises the alrm just in time for him to prevent the completion of the ticket! We both finished off our steak and chips, and were invited several times to take more chips - which we declined. Together with a half-litre carafe of the house red (acceptable) and 12.5% service charge, the bill came to £46.18 Not a bad deal, or a bad meal, especially given the location. Sandro and Marg
