LAMBS RESTAURANTLAMBS RESTAURANT12 SHEEP STREET Tel: 01789 292554 January 2003 A dependable and relaxing place for pre-theatre meals or simply for a relaxing, no hassle lunch or dinner in the heart of Stratford upon Avon. Lambs offers a most relaxing and inviting atmosphere (even to the apparently continuous stream of disappointed diners to be turned away due to house being full and their not having reserved a table in advance). Set in a very old (apparently mediaeval) half timbered building about 2 minutes from the theatre, Lambs is a buzzing and most welcoming venue both before theatre visits (and very well drilled at turning your selections around in plenty of time for you to get to your seats) and for lunches or dinners at any time. The surroundings are light and airy stripped wood on the ground floor and the same (but with very low beams) on the first floor. Having been shown your seat you are offered a nicely compact menu together with daily specials (usually a starter and a couple of mains ). From the main menu there is also a most reasonable set price offering ( 2 courses £11.50, 3 for £14.50) offering Soup Of The Day, Aubergine & Mozarella Roulade or Bang Bang Chicken Salad starters, Filo Pastry Moneybags with Goats Cheese & Roasted Peppers, Grilled Salmon Nicoise or Chargrilled Pork Loin with savoy cabbage, fondant potatoes and mustard sauce main courses and finally Blackberry & Apple Crumble with vanilla ice cream or White Chocolate Mousse with raspberry coulis desserts. On past visits the staff have also arranged for starters to be served in main course portions & vice versa , a very pleasing (and unusual) degree of flexibility & service. On our last visit , whilst tucking in to the delicious house bread we opted for the A La Carte and my wife chose Carpaccio of Beef fillet with rocket and parmesan (£6.25) whilst I opted for the Devilled Whitebait (£4.65) together with a delicious bottle of White Rioja (£15.75). The carpaccio was a generous portion of perfectly rosy beef described as "melt in the mouth" whilst my whitebait had the perfect spicy degree of devil. Main courses chosen were a Hot Mexican Chicken Salad with guacamole and sour cream (£9.95) whilst I opted for the special of Smoked Haddock, Crushed New Potatoes and Poached Egg with a Beurre Blanc (£10.25). The salad was a mountain of leaves, chicken and accompaniments and considered a perfect combination of flavours (and nobility in opting for salad!) whilst my Haddock was a wonderful mix of perfectly smoked (and NOT dyed) haddock, runny egg, potatoes and sauce. Being on the way to the theatre we opted for two double espressos to follow(£2.50 each) but on past visits the desserts, particularly the Lemon Tart & Raspberry sorbet (£4.50) and the Crumble, have been well worth selecting. Always a pleasure to eat at we whole heartedly recommend this venue to anyone visiting Stratford (but don't not book!). Ted Heath |
