The Captains TableChurch St We were lucky to get a table on a Saturday evening during the Barmouth Festival in August. We had already tried to get in at both the Indian Clipper and the Sagor Indian restaurants and were turned away saying they didn't even reserve tables on busy nights. I reckon they like to cram the tourists in as if they come of a conveyor belt. Although busy and being a small restaurant we were grateful that we could be accomodated. We have often walked past and been attracted by the menu outside, but for some reason passed on by. Now was our chance. The restaurant is small and pristine, on the busy (in the summer) main street in Barmouth. The restaurant obviously attracts a local clientelle as well as tourist trade. We were presented with the small but appetising menu including a selection of 'specials'. I chose goujons of cod and my wife chose the deep fried garlic mushrooms. For main course I chose lamb in a tarragon sauce and my wife chose chicken kiev. We both selected the sliced herb potatoes to accompany the meal. The food was nicely cooked. My goujons of cod were freshly prepared and piping hot, served with a small ramekin of tartare sauce. The garlic mushrooms were deep fried in batter and served with a garlic mayonnaise. The main courses were also very tasty, and overall we were satisfied with the meal and pleased that we had stumbled on this friendly little restaurant on the Welsh coast. Perhaps a little word about the portions, which we both found to be slightly economical. Recommended as a cut above the fast food and pub / hotel restaurants that abound in that area. Phil. |
