Bacchus Restaurant-Pizzeria32, Rue du
Marché-aux-Herbes Tel: +35 47.13.97 My first time in Luxembourg. I am staying at the Sheraton Aerogolf next to the Airport, so decide to explore the town in the evening. It is just about staying dry, not too cold, and I wander around aimlessly. There are many restaurants, but none take my fancy this evening. Maybe because I'm unsure of the language, the area, and I'm on my own. Later on, my appetite is gaining on me, and I'm at the South-East end of town, next to the Chambre des Députes (Parliament), just down fron the Grand-Ducal Palace. I spot the Bacchus restaurant, and note that it is "Buzzing". I am given a table near the back, and there are very few other places vacant. I order a beer while I peruse the menu, expecting standard Italian restaurant fare. Not so!. As I decide to start with a Lobster Bisque, I notice that all around me, conversations are being held in many different langauges: French, German, English, Italian, Flemish, Luxemburgian - what a cosmopolitan place. Then I remember that I'm in one of the centres of the EU and one of the centres of Banking. I have recently returned from holiday in Rome, and remember fondly the excellent pizzas I'd had there, so select a Napolitana for main course, and a half of the house red. The lobster bisque was a revelation: creamy, flavoursome, nicely coloured. One of the best I've ever had. The pizza was as good as any in Italy (they have a wood-fired pizza oven), and I entertained myself trying to recognise other languages and trying to understand snippets of conversations. I had a very pleasant evening watching other people and the staff, and enjoying the excellent food. Recommended
