| Just after leaving the Shaandaar, we walked past a grocer,
and caught a whiff of melon. On investigation, the aroma came from a box of Persian
Melons. I asked what was the difference, if any. Apparently, Persian Melons are just as
sweet as European melons, but have a much "crispier" texture. I persuaded Marg
that we should try one, despite the rather high price - 69p/Lb. The one we selected cam to
just over £5.00. When we got home and tried it, I was very pleased with it. Indeed the
texture was very crisp, without being at all firm - a very unusual sensation. Marg, in
turn, was not wholly convinced - she had to keep trying it because she couldn't really
make her mind up - in fact she "tried" most of it!!!
Another aspect that pleased me was that it was ripe - something that is exceedingly
rare with produce sourced from Supermarkets - a topic we'll explore in other sections of
the site.
Verdict: Excellent and demonstrates the value of a good ethnic
grocers.
